A Sewing Machine, A Living

“For the first time I am the one providing for my children.”

A small livelihood grant and training turned a monthly food parcel into a self-sustaining income.

Our local team first met the household during a community assessment, where need is verified in person rather than from a list — household income, dependants, health needs and any existing support are all recorded before anyone joins a programme.

Distribution lists were drawn up with community leaders and cross-checked by our staff, prioritising widow-headed households, orphaned children, elderly people living alone and families with no earning member. Every item handed over is signed for on receipt.

Support of this kind rarely stops with one person. When a child returns to school or a mother earns her own income, the effect reaches siblings, neighbours and, in time, the next generation of the same family.

Names and photographs are shared with permission. Where a family has asked for privacy, we withhold the name and use a representative image instead.
