Why Muharram

Muharram is one of the four sacred months, and good deeds performed within it carry particular weight. It is also the month of Ashura, a day associated with fasting and generosity.

For the communities we serve, the timing is practical as well as spiritual: Muharram falls after Eid al-Adha, when household reserves built up over the Eid period have run out.

Food prices remain high, school costs fall due, and families who managed through Eid find themselves short again within weeks.

Our Response

Muharram donations fund three things: staple food parcels for households with no income, clean water access through well repair and hand pumps, and medical treatment for cases we have verified but not yet funded.

Because these are ongoing programmes rather than a one-off distribution, gifts made in Muharram are spent within weeks rather than held.

“The best fasting after Ramadan is in the sacred month of Allah, Muharram.”

Sahih Muslim
